Bushfire risk assessment for schools
The Tasmania Fire Service has been providing bushfire risk assessments for Tasmanian schools since 2013.
The site assessment process involves a comprehensive evaluation of bushfire risk at the site, using criteria, systems and methodology that have been specifically developed by TFS for the Bushfire-Ready Schools program.
This includes measurement of bushfire fuels, the local landscape, the distances between bushfire fuels and school buildings, a thorough inspection of building materials and construction design, and how a fire in the area is predicted to behave under certain conditions.
Following site assessment and further analysis, a school/site is categorised based on its capacity to resist bushfire attack and provide shelter. There are four (4) distinct bushfire-ready schools categories.
